A fire broke out early this morning at Riverside Downs in northern Henderson County, Kentucky. The former harness racing track had been used as a thoroughbred training facility.
According to a report on courierpress.com, "about" 26 thoroughbreds lost their lives in the blaze.
The fire was called in to emergency dispatchers at roughly 4:30 a.m. local time. Baskett Volunteer Fire Department chief Bill Shaw told courierpress.com that only four horses escaped the barn, which was a total loss.
"…We have no idea at this point in time where it started in the building or what started it," Shaw was quoted as saying.
"It's very emotional," Shaw said. "I don't like to see any living thing die like that. That's a horrible way for animals to die."
