Speed and stamina were both on display at Georgian Downs on Tuesday evening as the Innisfil, Ontario oval hosted the $20,000 finals of the Xtreme Sprint Series and Xtreme Enduro Series
.
Longshot players got their money’s worth in the Xtreme Sprint when Countyline Cam rallied to win at odds of 20-1 for the team of driver Aaron Byron and trainer Mike Sinclair. The five-year-old son of Cambest, who was seventh at the quarter pole, scratched and clawed his way to the lead and drew clear to win by a one-length margin in a time of 1:13.3 in the five-eighths of a mile affair. Dusty Lane Tate (Scott Coulter), who was sent off at 29-1, and Major Wager (Paul MacKenzie), a 13-1 outsider, finished in a dead-heat for second.
Ron Chevrier of Chelmsford, ON owns the gelding, who put together a 1-1-1 record from four starts in the preliminary legs of the series. The pacer, who is now 4-for-29 this season, upped his lifetime earnings to $87,674 with the win.
Mr Martin went three-for-three in the preliminary legs of the Xtreme Enduro Series for trainer Pete Marostega, and he extended the winning streak to four-in-a-row thanks to his narrow decision in the 1-3/8 mile final. Paul MacKenzie rallied the six-year-old son of Yankee Glide to the win by three-quarters of a length over Maple Leaf Quix (Scott Zeron) in a time of 2:46.3. Northern Gaylord (Scott Coulter) tagged along throughout and wound up a distant third.
Sent off as the 4-5 favourite in the 13-horse affair, Mr Martin improved his 2010 record to 8-4-0 in 30 starts for owner Terry Hunter of Troy, ON. The gelding bumped his overall bankroll to $86,461 in the process.
