Rays Western was treated to a second-over trip in Monday’s $10,000 Preferred-2 Pace at Western Fair Raceway, and the gelding made the most of the opportunity en route to pulling off an 8-1 upset

.

With Nick Steward calling the shots, Rays Western got away sixth from his Post 3 starting spot while Bolero Trisco muscled to the lead and threw down an opening quarter clocked in :28.1. Bolero Trisco was still in command at the half in :58.3, but prompting him along from first-over was Bob Watts. Bolero Trisco broke the teletimer beam at the three-quarter pole in 1:27.3, with Rays Western in first-over attack mode after following cover second-over at the mid-way point.

Those two were locked in stride at the top of the stretch, but Rays Western’s :29-second closing speed was too much for Bolero Trisco to handle. Rays Western drew off to win by 2-1/4 lengths over the hard-closing First Rate Shark, with Bolero Trisco fading late and settling for third prize in the seven-horse affair.

Trainer Scott George of Sunbury, OH co-owns the five-year-old son of Western Hanover-Yankee Goddess with L J Stone of Muncie, IN. The victory was the pacer’s ninth of the season and the 29th of his career. The $5,000 payday lifted his lifetime earnings to $125,960.
