Trainer/driver Wayne Mac Lean used a ‘catch me if you can’ approach with Giona to win Thursday’s $7,500 Preferred 3 for trotters at Flamboro Downs.

Giona rocketed to the lead from Post 3 for Mac Lean, and together they chopped out fractions of :29.3, 1:00.4 and 1:30.2 before using a :30.1 closing panel to win by a pair of lengths over Eternal Quest in 2:00.3. Kennel Buddy rallied from the backfield to grab the show dough in the eight-horse affair.

Sent off at odds of 10-1, the five-year-old daughter of Angus Hall-Flying Dove Café improved this year’s record to 2-1-0 from three attempts for owner Jocelyn Menard of Chelmsford, Ont. The 10-time winner lifted her lifetime earnings to $108,172 in the process.
