Not Enough Grabs The Gold

A solid Molson Pace undercard was scheduled for Friday night at Western Fair Raceway with a $130,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Final for sophomore filly pacers garnering most of the attention

.

Driven by Brad Forward, Not Enough rallied from off the pace to post an eye-catching five and a half length victory in the Gold final keeping her three-year-old record untarnished in three starts so far this year.

The daughter of Grinfromeartoear – Party Planner got away fifth from Post 8 as Arts Star (Mark MacDonald) settled on top from Post 6. After putting up a :27.2 first quarter, her longtime rival, St Lads Popcorn (Jason Brewer), moved first-up from third and laid on the pressure past the half in :56.3 and three-quarters in 1:26.1.

Meanwhile, Not Enough, who was positioned second-over, committed three-deep at that point and let loose down the stretch. The 3-1 second choice used a :29.1 final frame to trounce her rivals in 1:55.3 while Windsong Filou (Jody Jamieson) came on for second. Northern Duchess (Mike Saftic) finished third and the favoured St Lads Popcorn ended up fourth.

“She’s a very nice [filly],” said Joe Fraser, the first assistant trainer of Not Enough, following the race. “She didn’t handle the track as well as we thought she would in the first elimination she won, but we did a little work on her and trained her up and she seemed to be very good tonight and she got a perfect trip. Brad Forward gave her a perfect trip.

“You got to have the driver and Brad Forward knows his way to the winner’s circle, we don’t have to show him that. He’s very talented as well as Trevor Henry, who drove our other horse. Brad got a perfect trip and he made the most out of it.”

Trained by Tracy Brainard for the Bulletproof Enterprises of Boca Raton, Florida, Not Enough earned her sixth win in 11 outings boosting her bankroll to $138,200.

In addition to the OSS Gold, a pair of Invitationals and a slew of Preferred events capped off the evening.

Acceptable Risk and driver Jody Jamieson, who scored five wins on the card, made co-owner and trainer Dan Morrissey proud with a win in the $20,000 Invitational Pace.

The six-year-old son of Intrepid Seelster flew off the gate from Post 3 and landed on top before the first turn, but the favoured Grand Bend Turbo (Michael Sumner) moved into command just past the :28.1 first quarter. That one took the field to the half in :57 and three-quarters in 1:25 as Donegal Gerald (Tony Kerwood) applied first-over pressure and Pacific Oak (Kenneth Oliver) with Our Lucky Killean (Mark MacDonald) angled wide. Jamieson, however, had his charge ready to go and the 2-1 second choice popped the pocket in the stretch and came on to win in 1:54.2.

Grand Bend Turbo was the runner-up with Button Up (Mike Horner) finished third.

Morrissey shares ownership of the 25-time winner with Ailsa Craig, Daniel McCann and William Woodburn of Parkhill, Ont. Acceptable Risk has banked $433,987 in his career. The win was his fifth of the season bringing his 2009 winnings to $69,190.

In the matching Invitational Trot, Titan Park wired the field to win in 1:59 with Jamieson aboard for the ride.

The Rene Allard trained son of Credit Winner left from Post 3 and settled on the front ahead of Call Me Yours (Dave Wall), who showed early gate speed. Titan Park rolled through fractions of :27.1, :56.4 and 1:27 and then held off a hard closing Brawn Seelster (Callie Rankin), who angled three-wide at the third quarter, by a length and a quarter to win. Grogan (Lorne House) survived a first-over journey to finish third.

Allard co-owns the winner of 34 races and nearly $199,000 in earnings with Ferne and Jack Frydman of Thornhill, Ont. The six-year-old gelding’s eighth win of the year lifted his winnings for ‘09 to over $60,000.

Along Came Polly, the 3-5 choice in the $12,800 Preferred #2 Pace, put up all the panels then rolled to a one and a half length decision in 1:55.3 with Mark MacDonald in the bike for trainer Philip Coleman. The five-year-old son of Camluck notched his 18th career win pushing his earnings over the $200,000 mark for owners David Shea of Campbellville and David Lumsden of Ancaster, Ont.

The Preferred #3 Pace featuring an $11,000 jackpot went to My Secret Beau, a four-year-old son of Presidential Ball, and Bruce Richardson. The George McClure trainee, who was sent to off at odds of 5-1, converted a perfect pocket trip into a 1:57.4 score. Darcy and Catherine McClure of Clinton, Ont. share ownership of the 10-time winner, who has over $85,000 in the bank.

Headpoles R Us put forth an iron tough performance to triumph in the $16,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred Pace. The fan favourite stopped the clock in 1:55.3 with a three-length lead on the field. Brad Forward drove the five-year-old daughter of Bo Knows Jate to her 17th victory for trainer Chris Haskell. Owned by Ron Haskell of Windsor, Ont., Headpoles R Us bumped her career earnings to over $109,000. The win was her ninth in 11 seasonal starts pushing her 2009 winnings over the $50,000 mark.

With Jamison at the lines, the odds-on favourite, Slomotion, made a quarter pole move and held strong to win the $11,000 Fillies & Mares Preferred #2 Pace in 1:56.4 by a length. The four-year-old mare sired by Camotion pulled off her ninth win lifting her bankroll to nearly $97,000 for trainer Scott Barr and owners Mervin and Darlene Smith of Dorchester, Ont.

Finally, Twin B Rawley rallied from off the pace to post a 13-1 upset in the $12,800 Preferred #2 Trot in rein to trainer/driver Gord McKnight. Owned by Rusty and Deanna Spitzig of Courtright, Ont., the five-year-old son of Malabar Maple prevailed by three and a quarter lengths in 2:00.3 scoring his 12th lifetime win and bumping his bankroll to over $159,000.
