Maven To TVG, With New Owners

Formidable trotting mare Maven will have new ownership when she starts in the $500,000 (U.S.) TVG final on Saturday at The Meadowlands.

Former Montrealer Herb Liverman, who bought the five-year-old mare at auction in Harrisburg three weeks ago for $750,000 and has since collected $137,500 with her from an elimination win and runner-up finish in the final of the Breeders Crown, now has John Fielding of Toronto and Joyce McClelland of Ohio as partners.

The three already are part of the ownership group of two-year-old trotting gelding Pinkman, who won his Breeders Crown final on the weekend.

“Actually, John and I are partners already in about 15 horses,” Liverman said.

He said the deal was proposed during the socializing that is part of Breeders Crown festivities and got concluded today.

“It takes off some of the pressure (of such an expensive purchase),” he said.

Liverman, 68, said he’d like to see Maven, a career winner of $1.7 million, compete in France’s trotting classic the Prix d’Amerique. “I haven’t been to Paris since my honeymoon (in 1981),” he said.

For now, though, the focus is Saturday’s TVG final, where she won’t have to face Breeders Crown champ Commander Crowe but will meet the always-dangerous Sebastian K. Also qualifying for the starting field of 10 is four-year-old Bee A Magician, champion in the Breeders Crown Mares Trot, also co-owned by Liverman.

You must have been watching a different race than the rest of us Mr Hobin. Here we thought Commander Crowe was parked 3 wide from the 9 hole for the first 2/8 covered 2nd over for the next 1/8 by Creatine then parked by Creatine to the 1/4, then came under immediate pressure from a first up Maven, then as the Track Announcer stated"The Grande Blonde" continued to trot strong and true not drifting out so that a perfect trip rested horse (Creatine) could get out if he even was good enough to challenge him to the Stakes Record tying mile. Oh for what it is worth Commander Crowed rarely races the mile distance, his average racing distance is a mile and a half, so maybe the Crowe could have gone around again!!

If you watched the race last week the best horse did not win the race, Creatine was tons the best no room !!

Commander Crowe and Sebastian K would have been a nice race to see. I am looking forward to Bee A Magician getting a trip behind Sebastian K to the head of the lane, then the race will be on. I'll take either one of these two for the win, preferably the Queen Bee.

Commander Crowe battling Sebastian K would have made it an interesting race!!
