Stakes Record For 2YO In Career Debut

Performing like a seasoned veteran in her career debut, Nitro Nittany came first over to score in a stake-record 1:57.2 in Tuesday’s $140,000 Pennsylvania Stallion Series event at The Meadows.

The stake for two-year-old filly trotters was contested over seven divisions, with South Carolina, Anonyme Hanover, Ruby, Tweet Me, Halladine and Pray With Me also taking $20,000 splits. Dave Palone enjoyed a stake double (Anonyme Hanover, Pray With Me) among his five wins on the 15-race card.

Although Nitro Nittany had only a single qualifier under her belt, trainer/driver Jim Raymer did not hesitate to send her first over down the backside. She gobbled up the leader, Sally Savannah, and downed her by 2-1/2 lengths. Champagne Dreams rallied for show. The time knocked a tick from the stake record established last year by Royal Assets.

“She likes to race, and she comes from a top race mare,” Raymer said of Harbor Racing Stable’s $21,000 yearling acquisition. “She’s a rare breed that likes to race. That’s the one ingredient we can’t teach them.”

South Carolina embarked on a similar first-over journey in her pari-mutuel bow — with similar results. At 12-1, she prevailed for Jimmy Takter, Jr. in 1:59.3, a length better than Promise Me. Czech It Out earned show.

“I thought first over was the right thing to do,” Takter said. “She was sitting comfortable, and I didn’t want to be stuck behind a horse.”

Jimmy Takter trains the daughter of Yankee Glide-Southwind Caramel for Brittany Farms.

Anonyme Hanover notched a convincing front-end victory in 2:00.3, six lengths better than Pinking Of You. Whispering completed the ticket.

“She has some ability, that filly. I never had to take her plugs out,” Palone said. “I’ve liked her from Day 1. She’s just now starting to get the hang of things. Right now, she needs hopples; she won’t down the road.”

Ron Burke conditions the daughter of Explosive Matter-Angelina Hall for Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and Matt Kakaley.

Stake racing continues Wednesday at The Meadows with the Meadow Gladys, a $257,780 PA Sires Stake for freshman filly trotters.
