"Without challenge life would be boring. Now having said that, fixing the challenges of racing will be more of a marathon than a sprint."

On today's Trot Radio, Norm Borg talks to John Gallinger who on Friday was announced as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Standardbred Canada. Gallinger will take over the role from Ted Smith, who will be retiring at the end of May.

Gallinger feels it's premature to give specifics on what exactly his focus would be upon starting in his new role, but he would be coming in with his eyes and ears open.

"I want to spend a good portion of my time in the first few months speaking with staff, members of the organization and the stakeholders," continued Gallinger, "and more important than speaking, really listening to what people have to say and use that feedback as a tool to guide the direction we want to head as Standardbred Canada."

Congratulations John on your appointment.A top priority in your job jar is to address the breakdown of the para mutual betting due to small pools. Many of our small tracks are basically non betting tracks for example Sudbury and Grand Prairie with total handles of less than 5000.The 2 dollar bettor has been cleaned out by the exotic bets and once gone never returns. The multiple wager was brought in without any thought, the huge increase in the odds of winning was not accompanied by a decrease in stake at most tracks, presently at Fraser Downs more than 60 percent of superfecta bets are 20 cent wagers, but because of CPMA rules exactor and triactor stakes are frozen. Horseracing is all about gambling, John unless we fix this problem there will be no Standardbred Canada 10 years from now.

John,

Congratulations on your new position. Looks like Standardbred Canada will be flying 1st class in Hi Tech! Our industry certainly needs it, and we look forward to supporting your efforts.
See you in the Winner's Circle
