On Monday, October 28, Woodbine Entertainment announced plans for added-distance races and a change to the Post 10 starting spot as part of pilot projects beginning November 1 at Woodbine Mohawk Park.

Beginning Friday (Nov. 1), all races at Woodbine Mohawk Park will score nine across the gate with Post 10 starting in the second tier. The start of November will also launch a project to contest a race nightly at the distance of a mile and three eighths with 11 starters.

The mile-and-three-eighths races will receive a purse increase and all starters will receive money. Post 10 and 11 for the added-distance races will start from the second tier.

The pilot projects are scheduled to run through the remainder of the calendar year. An update on the projects will be given prior to the start of the 2020 live racing season.

I agree with Randy Copley, trailers are terrible when trying to handicap a race. To make things worse, on Oct. 31st, the seventh race has two trailers, screwing up both Win Fours. Also, whenever horsemen are interviewed, they bemoan the fact that their horses nose isn’t on the gate when they draw a trailing position. If horsemen and bettors don’t like it, why is it being done?

What a great idea. That's thinking out of the box. All Hi5 races should be contested this way. Kudos to Mohawk Park.

Distance races might be good for owners and trainers, but very bad idea for handicapping races as a horse player. It will be very difficult to handicap final quarter times and Mile times. Just adding much more difficulty to handicapping when switching back and forth to mile races and this added distance races . therefor the bettor will be at another disadvantage in trying to make a profit.

As a horseplayer there is nothing worse than trailers in a race. Not a good idea.

Why not let the trainer have the option of trailing after the draw has been made? Some may rather be on the gate.
