Delaware S-Bred Succumbs To West Nile

The Office of the Delaware State Veterinarian has reported a confirmed case of West Nile Virus in a Standardbred.

An unvaccinated yearling Standardbred filly in Kent County showed an onset of clinical signs on October 11, including ataxia in all four limbs, buckling in the forelimbs progressing to recumbency, muscle fasciculations and somnolence.

The horse was euthanized on 10/15/2018 following 60 hours of recumbency.

Samples taken showed positive IgM capture ELISA, and positive PCR on necropsy.
