This afternoon, the Ontario Harness Horse Association issued a release to the industry regarding today’s draw for the Monday, January 5 card of racing at Woodbine Racetrack.
Here's OHHA's release:
OHHA thanks the horsepeople who heeded the call to withhold entries at Woodbine. That call was made at a large gathering of horsepeople on December 30, 2008, who voted to withhold entries starting with the Monday, January 5, 2009 race card drawn earlier today.
The request remains in place until horsepeople have agreed to a satisfactory OHHA racing contract with the Woodbine Entertainment Group. Negotiations are expected to resume early next week as OHHA awaits WEG’s availability to meet.
OHHA President Jim Whelan, commenting on the draw said, “We thank horsepeople for their support and for their solidarity with each other and with their association. This is a critical time for us all and standing strong together will get us to where we want to be. We knew that some horses would be in the entry pipeline but the vast majority of horsepeople have withheld their entries. Unity among horsepeople is vital if we are to maintain control over our futures in the racing game. It’s great to see that unity in action”
Again, horsepeople voted to withhold entries at Woodbine until a satisfactory OHHA contract is achieved.
