Graham’s Ready To Get It On

There is no doubt that reinsman Shane Graham is excited to be heading to Canada to contest the 2017 World Driving Championship and see the country. “It’s all starting to sink in now. The countdown has gone from being a couple of months, which seemed like ages away, to a few weeks, and now it’s here.”

In March, Harness Racing Australia announced that the Queensland-based Graham will represent Australia at the 2017 WDC.

“Shane has been most consistent in recent times, taking the J.D. Watts award as Australia’s leading driver in 2015 with 259 winners and finishing runner-up last year,” HRA Chairman Geoff Want said at the time. “I have no doubt he will perform well in the demanding series and be a wonderful ambassador for Australian harness racing.”

Graham will be accompanied by Todd McCarthy. The two will fly out of Australia, stop for a layover in Los Angeles, and then arrive in Canada on Friday (Australian time). “It’s a long flight, but I’m really looking forward to getting there,” Graham has been quoted as saying. “I think once I get on the plane I will definitely feel overwhelmed, but excited.”

Having been told that Canada is one of the most beautiful places in the world, Graham is hoping to be able to squeeze in some sightseeing. Drivers in the competition get to enjoy several organized events as well as some spare time.

The third generation horseman has been a Queensland’s premier driver for the past three seasons and claimed national honours in the 2014-15 season. He represented the Sunshine State in the 2003 Australasian Young Drivers’ Championship, finishing third. Graham has also worn the Banana Bender silks twice in the Australian Driver’s Championship, finishing with a third and fifth.

“These kinds of series are always fun, yet very competitive,” Graham said. “So often it comes down to luck and drawing the right horses.”
