The Beach & The Marsh

Kudos to the folks at SC for campaigning Somebeachsomewhere for Canada's Athlete of the Year.

As harness writers struggle for new words to describe His Royal Highness, an entire nation of sportswriters remain (mostly) in the dark. What a fabulous opportunity to showcase the sport's hottest commodity. Furthermore, could there be a more poignant au revoir for the racing portion of his career?

As lovingly illustrated in SC's open letter to the Lou Marsh Trophy Committee, SBSW's incredible achievements are undeniably qualified, even when stacked against his human counterparts.

That, I suppose, will be the true question: Will the Lou Marsh Trophy Committee consider four legs rather than two?

The only issue I see with this is they would have a whole slew of people from other factions of the horse world up in arms about it.... If we consider SomeBeach then we have to consider Eric Lamaze's horse Hickstead who's won just about every show jumping title across the globe this year (olympic gold and silver, several world cups, CN International million dollar class, etc etc etc etc)... I did notice Eric himself is up for the award... but why not the horse?

Secretariat was athlete of the year in '72 or 73 in the USA so I hope he does at least get a mention
