PROBALEY LAMENESS, END OF THE YEAR TIRED AND NOT COMPETETIVE, OR OTHER EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES, WHO KNOWS?
BUT IT DOES HAPPEN. THEY SHOULD CHANGE THE RULES A BIT THOUGH.

Allan Schott SAID...

This was the silliest thing, just cancelling the race, cutting the purse in half and just handing over the purse split three ways. I assume the Hambletonian Society was more interested in saving the $20,000 added money they had promise for the race. If that is the case, just change the rules for the future to indicate the added money gets added to the race assuming a minimum of six horses enter the race and require the horses race for the purse regardless of the number of horses that entered provided the purse will still be in excess of $50,000. For over $200,000; they can race in a non-wagering event.

I remember back in the 70's, I believe it was Silk Stockings that was racing in PA sires stakes and was the only one that showed up to race, she went a training mile in front of the judges and was awarded all the purse $$$.

5-11-2009 4:14 pmknow this may be a stupid

know this may be a stupid question but here goes any way.
why would you pay out money to remain eligible for a race that you're not going to participate in. I know for me that money doesn't grow on trees & I have to work hard to earn it. I'm pretty sure it's the same for everyone else so why waste it by not entering into the race?????

Jeff Porchak SAID...

This week's poll comes in light of what happened with this year's Matron for two-year-old colt pacers. With 169 horses making payments to remain eligible, only three colts entered (link to story here).
