Between August 28 and 30, 2017 the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs was notified of West Nile Virus-positive test results in an additional four horses, one from each of the following areas of Ontario: Algoma District and Simcoe, Niagara and Frontenac Counties.

Three of these cases exhibited severe neurological signs and were euthanized. One had mild neurological signs and is recovering with veterinary treatment. Of these four cases, two were unvaccinated horses (severe cases) and two had not received a West Nile Virus vaccination this year (one of the severe cases and the mild case).

To date in 2017, there have been six confirmed cases of West Nile Virus in horses from Ontario. In 2016, there were two confirmed cases in Ontario.
