The Atlantic Veterinary College is conducting a survey about the health and welfare of horses on Prince Edward Island and needs the help of Island horsepeople.
Participation is entirely voluntary as the college conducts its survey.
“To date we have over 20 barns that have completed the survey but still need another 25 or so stables to finish up,” said Dr. Kathleen MacMillan of the Atlantic Veterinary College.
If an Island horseperson decides to participate, a veterinarian will come to the property and ask some questions about their health and daily routine, says Dr. MacMillan.
“It is very non-invasive. We simply want to visit your farm, have a look at your facility, and ask some questions about the general care, management and feeding of your horses. We will also perform a body condition score on each horse at the property.”
Study coordinators are looking for P.E.I. horses of any age stabled at a race facility or farm with results remaining anonymous.
“Each visit usually takes an hour, but may take a little longer if you have a lot of horses,” said Dr. MacMillan, who also added that broodmares would be a welcome addition to the study. “We can accommodate your schedule with evening or weekend appointments.”
