The I Love Canadian Harness Racing Fan Club has a pair of great events planned this fall!

First up is a “Behind the Scenes Tour” of the Canadian Yearling Sale on Sunday, September 14 at the Sales Pavilion at Flamboro Downs in Dundas, Ontario and the second event is a Tour of Ideal Training Centre in Erin, Ontario, on Saturday, September 20.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF A YEARLING SALE

Fall is better known as “Yearling Sale Season” among members of the horse racing industry. The sport’s future stars will leave the breeding farm behind to begin their journey to the racetrack.

The ILCHR Fan Club’s “Behind the Scenes of a Yearling Sale” tour is in conjunction with The Canadian Yearling Sale at Flamboro Downs on Sunday, September 14.

Fan Club members will be treated to a continental breakfast to kick off the day at 9:30 a.m. before receiving an overview of “The Sale Experience” with Heather Reid, Manager of Standardbred Canada Sales.

The tour will then proceed to the barns with veteran owner-breeder Brian Webster for a conformation lesson and inspection. Yearlings spend much of the showing day out of their stalls, in the shed row or outside the barn to be viewed by prospective buyers. These individuals will be looking at these horses from head to hoof, searching for any potential flaws that could create issues later on. Webster will walk members through the process of viewing and inspecting a horse.

After a visit to see several Consignors, there will be a short lesson on how to read a pedigree with one of our Pedigree experts. At the completion of this final workshop, members will be invited to stay through the afternoon to observe the sale. 164 yearlings will go through the sales ring on September 14th, so there’s lots of auction action to take in! The Fan Club will be offering this sale day package for $10. This covers breakfast, an I Love Canadian Harness Racing souvenir and the morning workshops. There are a limited number of spots, and you must be over the age of 18 to take part.

FAN CLUB INVITED TO IDEAL TRAINING CENTRE

The ILCHR Fan Club is also inviting members to a tour of Ideal Training Centre, located just outside of Acton, Ontario, on Saturday, September 20.

Owned by Mac and Carol Nichol, of Burlington, Ontario, and managed by George and Marcia Peters, Ideal is home to many of Ontario’s top trainers and horses, including two time O’Brien Award winner, Mister Herbie.

In July 2008, the Nichols enthusiastically took over an existing Standardbred Horse training centre. They upgraded the training centre to provide a first class facility and safe and enjoyable atmosphere for the equine athletes and horsemen.

Nestled in the town of Erin in Wellington County, just seven minutes north of Acton on Hwy. 25, on a beautifully landscaped and well maintained 50 acre property, ITC has great access to all major tracks in Ontario.

The training centre, named for the Nichol’s World Champion horse American Ideal, includes three barns with a total of 123 stalls, 31 generous sized paddocks, a covered eight-horse exerciser and a six-horse exerciser. Blacksmith and Operations Managers are on site along with numerous on-call Veterinarians. The 5/8 mile training track has sweeping turns.

There will be a walking tour of the facility, a visit to some of the stables with time to talk to a number of the trainers, a blacksmith demonstration and a session on horse health with a local veterinarian.

A BBQ lunch is included. The cost of the event is $10 (to cover the cost of lunch) and includes a Fan Club souvenir. There are a limited number of spots, and you must be over the age of 18 to take part. Contact [email protected] or Industry Marketing at (905) 858-3060 to reserve your spot today!

Transportation is not supplied. We will meet at the Training Centre.
