Jan H. Filer, 70, of Batavia, NY, a well known Standardbred driver and trainer, passed away at his residence on August 4, 2015.

He was born November 11, 1944, in Pittsford, a son of the late Louis W. and Florence (Hall) Filer.

From an early age, Filer had an attraction to the harness horse racing circuit, which carried him all over the east coast, racing some of the best trotters around.

Simply put, racing was his life. Filer was a member of the Western New York Harness Horsemen’s Association, and by 2012 he had spent 50 years in the business.

Filer retired from driving Standardbreds in 1999. His last steer came at Pocono. He continued to train racehorses until 2005. In fact, Filer went an impressive 10 for 59 in his final year of training. That season his stable included the Open trotter Satelite Dish.

Filer is survived by his daughters, Deborah (Todd) Dibble and Shauna (Brendan) Blake; grandson, Pasquale (Justina) Rapone III; great-grandchildren, Carter Joseph and Mason Jay; brother, Barrett; sister, Evonne Filer-Zummo; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Adrian.

A funeral and Celebration of Life service for Filer took place on Thursday, August 13 in Batavia, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
