Clarence ‘Sonny’ DeLong Passes

Standardbred horse owner and breeder Clarence ‘Sonny’ DeLong passed away on Thursday, July 6.

A longtime resident of Grove City, Ohio, DeLong was born on July 17, 1940 and was a graduate of Central High School.

A retiree of the banking industry, DeLong was a member of the United States Trotting Association and was an avid owner/breeder. He owned more than 60 horses, bred 17 and was a familiar face on the Ohio circuit.

DeLong was a mason in the Grove City Masonic Lodge 689, treasurer of the Ohio Special Olympics for many years, was on the board of directors and served as treasurer for the Grove City Kids Association, belonged to the Elks Lodge 37 and Lions Club member.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty Jo, parents Clarence and Mary DeLong, son-in-law Rick Kerschner and sister Mary Louise Farrar. Surviving family includes children, Melissa Hawk, Lora Kerschner, Kevin (Rebecca) DeLong; grandchildren, K.C. (Chelsea) Carey, Katie (Ryan) Fullen, Andrew Hawk, Alex Hawk; great-grandchildren, Owen, Sullivan, Shepherd, Hudson, Evangeline; brother, Skip (Sarah) Martin; brother-in-law, Bill Anderson; sister-in-law, Vicki Anderson.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday (July 12) at Newcomer Funeral Home and Crematory, SW Chapel, 3393 Broadway, Grove City, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday (July 13) at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Concord Cemetery, Grove City, Ohio.
