Surrounded by family, Bruce Hudson Lloyd passed away on June 25 at the Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital after a brief illness at the age of 88.

He leaves his beloved wife of 63 years Helen (nee Forwood) Lloyd, sister Sandra Boyd, daughters Mary Lloyd and Wendy Lloyd (Karsten Riedel) sons Tom Lloyd (Margot Fairlie) and Peter Lloyd (predeceased by his wife Danielle Vandervliet), thirteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Bruce was born and raised in Toronto, the son of Lorne and Norma Lloyd (nee Shier) and predeceased by his sister Joan Mitchell.

After an interesting few years at Upper Canada College, Bruce left school to join the Royal Canadian Navy. After WWII, Bruce began a sales career before joining his father and founding Trent Valley Sand and Stone in the early 1950’s, one of his many companies which still exists today. For over 60 years Bruce was a leader in the aggregate business and served on many associations such as the APAO, where he served on the Board for over 35 years and was President in 1964. Bruce joined the National Aggregate Association in 1957, became a Director in 1960 and was the first Canadian to be named Chairman of the Board in 1990. In 2001, Bruce was named the Aggregate Producer of the year.

For over 20 years Bruce owned and operated Trent Valley Stables, which bred and raced many champion Standardbreds. For over 13 years he was a Director of the Ontario Jockey Club and was most proud of his work with the Equine Research Centre Guelph where he served as Chairman for over 10 years.

Bruce was a very caring and generous man, especially when it came to under-privileged children. He was passionate about the St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club where he served on the board for almost 50 years, including many as Chairman. Bruce was the current Chairman of the Advisory Committee.

In 1979, Bruce was a founding Director of the Nelson M Davis Scholarship, one of the largest scholarships of MBA funding at the Ivy Business School, University of Western Ontario. Bruce served as Chairman for over six years.

He adored his family, especially his wife Helen, and on May 31 they spent the day together celebrating their 63rd anniversary. They travelled and cruised the world together. He was an avid sportsman who excelled in hockey, water skiing and snow skiing. He was a lifetime member at Rosedale Golf Club. Bruce loved spending weekends with his family at Osler Bluff Ski Club in the winter and cottaging in Muskoka in the summer.

A funeral service will be held in St. John's York Mills Anglican Church, 19 Don Ridge Drive, Toronto on Tuesday, July 7 at 2:00 p.m.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the entire staff at Sunnybrook Veterans for all their kindness and assistance. In lieu of flowers, Bruce would be pleased if you made a donation to the St. Alban’s Boys and Girls Club. Condolences and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
