C. Donald ‘Don’ Wilson Passes

Trot Insider has learned that longtime Standardbred horseman, owner and breeder Don Wilson of Okotoks, Alta. has passed away.

Wilson drove on a part-time basis. His first win came in 1964 with in Ladner, B.C. with Miss Patsy. Highlights from Wilson’s racing cvareer include setting the track record at Stampede Park in 1974 with Native Stream Wilson’s last win came in 1983 at Northlands Park in Edmonton, Alta. with the well known Monkey Wrench.

Wilson was a founding member of the Stampede Park Pace Promotions Committee and later became a director with Horse Racing Alberta. Wilson was passionate about harness racing and was always promoting the sport. He introduced many new owners to harness racing over the years.

Don was predeceased by his father, Forest (F.A.) Wilson, who had a long career as a trainer/driver and was the first president of the Alberta Standardbred Horse Association.

Don is survived by longtime Alberta horseman Derek (Lori) Wilson.
