Broodmare Consuela Lobell, 33, was euthanized Thursday (May 18) after breaking her hip while out in the pasture where she had resided for the last decade.
The daughter of Mystic Park-Cher Lobell was bred by Nancy Helman and Lana Lobell Farms of NJ and owned by Robert Waxman, Castleton Farms, Sam Goldband and Marvin Katz in partnership with Al Libfield until Libfield purchased her solely in 2003.
Consuela Lobell was a half-sibling to Colette Lobell (Joie De Vie, $256,469), Bullville Victory (Valley Victory, $759,285) and Bullville Chef (Flak Bait, $173,559). Her granddam, Crystal Lobell, was responsible for four horses that broke the $100,000 mark in earnings and Consuela Lobell carried on the family tradition.
A winner of the Tompkins-Geers Stake in 1986 who retired with $154,905 in earnings, Consuela Lobell was a prolific producer in the breeding shed. She produced Miss Goal (Armbro Goal, $190,777) who was second in the 1996 editions of the Hambletonian Oaks and American National Stake, before becoming an outstanding broodmare in her own right for Southwind Farms in foaling Southwind Maywood (Valley Victory, $297,251), Southwind Martini (Conway Hall, $112,450) and Southwind Moni (Andover Hall, $204,674).
Southwind Maywood is the dam of Russell Hill (Conway Hall, $445,536) and Five Towns (Andover Hall, $320,325).
Another daughter of Consuela Hanover, Veronica Lake (Supergill, $12,773) was responsible for Ocean Front (Muscles Yankee, $139,404) and I Wanted Wings (Muscles Yankee, $394,424). While a third daughter, Bet On Baltic (Baltic Speed, $2,550) had seven foals, with five winners, one of which, Bet It All (Broadway Hall, $109,102), eclipsed $100,000 in purse earnings.
