Jockey Jose Flores has passed away as a result of injuries sustained from an accident on Monday (March 19) at Parx Racing in Pennsylvania. He was 56.

On Monday, Flores was riding 14-1 shot Love Rules, a horse he had won his three weeks prior. Flores and Love Rules were on the lead when the horse fell and forced Flores headfirst into the track. The jockey was transported to hospital, where he remained on life support until Thursday.

“It’s unbelievable, just sickening,” said leading Parx trainer Scott Lake, who's known Flores since 1991. “He was just tremendous, a nice guy, always a professional.”

Parx inducted Flores into the track's Hall of Fame in 2013.

“The entire Parx Racing team is deeply saddened by the loss of Parx Hall of Fame Jockey, Jose Flores, who died from injuries suffered in a racing accident on Monday afternoon," said the track in a statement issued Thursday. "Jose was an outstanding jockey who was greatly admired for both his superb talent and his wonderful personality. He embodied all that is good in the world of horse racing, and will be missed immensely. We offer our deepest condolences and prayers to his family, friends and the entire racing community.”

In just over three decades of racing with nearly 29,000 starts, Jose Flores won 4,650 races with his mounts banking more than $64 million.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 27 at Tomlinson Funeral Home, Bensalem, Penn. from 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. with funeral services to follow.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Jose Flores.
