Helen Zurawel Passes

Published: December 14, 2017 04:26 pm EST

The Alberta Standardbred industry is mourning the passing of Helen Zurawel after a brief illness.

Helen, who is the wife of trainer James Zurawel, was in the trucking business and got involved in the Standardbred industry in the 1980s and raced primarily in Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Helen worked for trainers Warren Grant and Bill Companion and will be missed in the barn area for her awesome cabbage rolls, perogies and various pies. When asked who she was cooking for, Helen would always smile and say ‘my friends,’ which was the entire backstretch.

Helen is survived by her husband, James; daughters, Donna Dubinsky, Charlene Mitchell and Shelly Arsenault; as well as several grand and great grandchildren.

A celebration of Helen’s life will take place on Wednesday, December 20 at 10:00 a.m. at Glenwood Funeral Home, 52356 Range Road 232, Sherwood Park.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of Helen Zurawel.
