Vincent 'Butch' Horne Passes

Published: October 4, 2014 01:58 pm EDT

Vincent 'Butch' Horne, age 71, of Enfield, N.S., passed away on Oct. 2 at his home, surrounded by family.

Butch will be remembered for his kind and gentle nature and sense of humour. Butch loved sports and was a baseball pitcher of note during his day. In addition to playing sports himself, Butch loved the time he spent at the rink or the ball field watching his sons.

Professionally, Butch was the owner of Horne's Roofing, a family business that has spanned three generations. Butch's true passion, however, was for horses. He was an owner, trainer and driver of Standardbred horses for more than 45 years. His love of horses was apparent to anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Born in Halifax, Butch was a son of the late Vincent and Marie (Malloy) Horne. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Cathy.

Butch will be missed by his wife, Diane (Muise); sons, Kevin, Enfield; Darcy (Jennifer), Dutch Settlement; granddaughters, Jessica, Emma, and Peyton; and great-grandson, Connor. Butch will also be missed by his brothers, Terry, Greg (Norma), and Albert, all of Enfield; and his sisters, Betty (John MacIsaac), Sudbury, Ont.; and Faye (Keith Adams), Enfield.

There will be no visitation. Funeral will be held in St. Bernard's Church in Enfield on Monday, Oct. 6 at 11 a.m., Father Mike Walsh will officiate. A reception will follow in Enfield Legion.

The family would like to give a special thanks to palliative care nurse, Dawn Martell RN, Kate Sanderson, and home support worker, Cynthia Rushton-Collins, for their support during this difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Butch's memory can be made to Parkinson Society Maritime Region.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends and Butch Horne.

Today I was very saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Butch. I had the pleasure of meeting him the first time around 50 plus years ago. We shared a few laughs in those days racing at Sackville, the Halifax commons, the old cinder track up by the forum and Truro.
I never met a person who din’t enjoy his company which speaks volumes of his character. I offer my sincere condolenses to Kevin, Darcy and the entire Horne family. RIP Buddy. (Paul)
