Benefit Organized For Donnie McDonald

A number of drivers from the WEG circuit will be donating commissions from Thursday night's drives at Woodbine Racetrack to longtime horseman Donnie McDonald, who is recovering from recent triple bypass surgery

McDonald, now residing in Inverness, N.S., formerly worked in Ontario for trainers such as Joe Stutzman and Gregg McNair. Gregg's son Doug told Trot Insider that he goes way back with McDonald and was quick to organize aid for the horseman.

According to McNair, he and fellow drivers Chris Christoforou, Jonathan Drury, Sylvain Filion, Trevor Henry, Phil Hudon, Anthony MacDonald, James MacDonald, Paul MacDonell and Rick Zeron have all pledged 50 percent of Thursday night's driving commissions to Donnie, with vacationing drivers Jody Jamieson and Mike Saftic also committing to a financial contribution.

Friends of McDonald have also organized a benefit dance set for Saturday, January 31 at the Inverness Fire Hall. Music will be provided by IROC Sound for the dance, slated to start at 9:00 p.m. and run until 1:00 a.m.

I am simply a gambler/fan though after 40 years of this I almost feel like part of the racing community having talked and listened to so many of them over the years.
No matter what you think of the actual racing, rules, or what have you...One thing which is undeniable is the racing community right across the world certainly look after their own. They are second to no one when it comes to stepping up to the plate with their services and fundraisers etc to help a fallen brother/sister get back on their feet whether that person is a trainer, driver, owner, groom or even horse. They are quick to step in and help out. Makes me proud of the humanity displayed at these times.
Well done

Here's hoping for a fast and healthy recovery for Donnie. One of the hardest working men in the business. Quick with a joke and always in good humour even when his health wasn't the best. A pleasure to be around. Hope to see you soon old buddy...
