Trot Insider has learned that Al Aikin of Angus, Ont. passed away peacefully on Friday, January 11 at the age of 77 after a long battle with diabetes.
Aikin was a longtime harness racing industry participant, most recognized through his operation of the paddock kitchens at both Barrie Raceway and Georgian Downs.
Al will be sorely missed by his many friends.
A celebration of Al's life will take place at a date yet to be determined this coming spring, with further details to be posted when available.

I used to enjoy sitting in
I used to enjoy sitting in the kitchen enjoying a sandwich with Al and some of his buddies like Kent Baker and Pat Crowe and listen to them talk of the old days at Barrie Raceway. Al will be missed by many people but at least he won’t suffer anymore. R.I.P. Al

Sorry to hear of Al's passing. Sure won't be same without him in kitchen at the track. Best paddock food of any racetrack ever indeed.

So sad to read this, dad and I had a joke going to mom's for dinner every Wed and Sat at Barrie raceway. You will be missed Al, Georgian won’t be the same.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Al, he went through a lot of health issues in the last year. Al was a fixture in the track kitchen at Barrie Raceway and Georgian Downs over the years. The best food ever and always stayed open to cook for us. Al will be surely missed by everyone. Our Condolences.
