Flamboro Downs will wrap up its 2008 Ontario Sires Stakes season on Friday evening with two $41,000 Trillium Series divisions for the freshman pacing fillies.
Give Me Some Sugar will make her Trillium Series debut in the second division, and Fredrick Roloson is hoping that driver Anthony Haughan was correct in his assessment of her chances.
“Anthony Haughan has driven her a couple of times and I asked him about putting her in, and he said, ‘Fred, go ahead. She should be all right in there,’” recalls the resident of Brantford, ON.
Haughan will steer the Camluck filly from Post 3 in Friday’s fifth race, two spots to the right of Super Final winner St Lads Popcorn, who landed the advantageous rail. Roloson has no illusions of besting 10-time winner St Lads Popcorn, but he is looking forward to seeing how Give Me Some Sugar stacks up against the best in the province.
“I’d like to try to get her out of there, get a nice easy trip, and see what we can do from the three-quarter pole home,” says Roloson.
The third generation horseman purchased Give Me Some Sugar from the Summer Sizzler Sale in August for a modest $6,700. In five starts under Roloson’s tutelage the young pacer has logged one third and one fifth-place finish, and she heads into Friday’s test off a 1:58.2 mile in a November 3 maiden at Flamboro Downs.
“I think she can go a little more maybe,” speculates Roloson, who owns and trains Give Me Some Sugar. “It seems she doesn’t have a bottom end to her yet.”
Roloson intends to race the filly a few more times and then give her a winter vacation, in hopes that she will be ready for a regular gig on the Ontario Sires Stakes circuit next season. In her only provincial appearance this year, the novice pacer finished seventh in a Grassroots division at Flamboro on September 26.
Three other fillies who competed at the Grassroots level this summer will line up behind the starting gate in the second Trillium division on Friday, while St Lads Popcorn is joined by two of her Gold Series peers. American-sired filly Oh So Sweet rounds out the field of eight.
In the first division five Grassroots regulars, including four who battled over the Flamboro oval in the post season, will take on one American-sired youngster and a trio of Gold Series contestants. Aces N Sevens daughter Shellace heads into Friday’s contest off a fourth-place finish in the November 15 Super Final and will make her bid for a Trillium Series trophy from Post 1.
The first race on Flamboro Downs’ Friday evening program gets under way at 6:00 p.m., with the two-year-old pacing fillies making their second last Trillium Series start in Races 3 and 5.
