Last week's SC poll question posed six opinions on the state of whipping in harness racing, and with the poll now closed the final numbers are in.

Of the six options presented, the single highest vote getter was that "current practices are sufficient", receiving 574 out of 2,591 votes - or 22.2 per cent. However, it should be noted that the majority of respondents - more than three-quarters of the people that participated - did not feel that option best fit their opinion on whipping.

The options presented by SC with their vote totals are as follows:

  • Whips should be banned
    - 367 votes (14.2%)
  • Drivers should keep one line in each hand the entire mile
    - 513 votes (19.8%)
  • A new lighter, gentler whip should be used
    - 264 votes (10.2%)
  • Current rules should be more strictly enforced
    - 557 votes (21.5%)
  • New set of harsher fines and suspensions should be adopted
    - 316 votes (12.2%)
  • Current practices are sufficient
    - 574 votes (22.2%)
