Lucy B Shows Her Elders How It Is Done

At just the age of three, Lucy B took on older rivals in Friday’s $25,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Pace at The Meadows and she taught her elders a lesson when she scored a “Lightning Lane” victory.

Allowed to draw inside because of her relative inexperience, Lucy B used the rail effectively, getting away second and stalking the leader, Streetcarnamedsire, throughout. Under Aaron Merriman’s urging, she shot through the inside to prevail in 1:54.1 over a sloppy track, a neck better than Streetcarnamedsire. Spring Break was a breath further back in third.

Pat Medors trains Lucy B, a daughter of Whelan Willie – Bessie B and a granddaughter of longtime Meadows favourite Our Bucephalus, for Beulah Bigley. Lucy B didn’t start at two, but has won eight races and $131,551 this season. Her effort was all the more noteworthy as it came only five days after her fifth-place finish in the Pennsylvania Sires Stake championship.

In Friday’s companion feature, Motherland enjoyed an unchallenged front-end trip and converted it to victory in the $25,000 Filly & Mare Preferred Trot. Trainer/driver Marty Wollam guided the daughter of Andover Hall – US Victory to her 1:56.1 triumph. A late surge carried B Vs Sister to second, a length and a quarter in arrears, while That Flyn Angel was a closing third.

Steiner Stock Farm and Acadia Farms own Motherland, a four-year-old who pushed her career bankroll beyond $109,000.
