High Winds Play Havoc In Delaware

The remnants of Hurricane Ike moved into the area bringing 40–50 mile per hour winds forcing an early cancellation of the first day of Grand Circuit racing at the Delaware County Fair.

The first 15 races were contested, but the winds continued to increase forcing the early closure of the entire fairgrounds.

The cancelled stakes races (the Ohio Breeders Championships and the Fouts Memorial Pace) will be moved to 12 noon on Monday, September 15. The original Monday card will be contested at approximately 1 p.m.

Prior to the nasty weather moving in, two divisions of the Ohio Breeders Championship for sophomore filly trotters were contested.

In the first $19,859 division, Normas Rose (Aaron Merriman) found enough room late in the stretch to edge Britt Van (Kyle Ater). The Master Lavec lass is trained by Scott Cox for Jack Tramonte of Wadsworth, Ohio. The victory in 2:00 was her sixth of the year in 13 starts.

In the second division, Southern Jade (Ray Paver) scored in a lifetime best 1:59.2. The sophomore daughter of Master Lavec is owned by James B. Bianchi of Columbus, Ohio and trained by Hugh Beatty. R U Watching (Jim Dailey) and Less Stress (Russell Swartz) rounded out the top three.
