St Lads Moonwalk and Continual Hanover gave trainer Jack Darling two reasons to smile Tuesday evening at Mohawk Racetrack, as each colt captured an $18,000 OSS Grassroots division for two-year-old pacing colts and geldings.
With five divisions in total, St Lads Moonwalk rallied to win his split in 1:53.3 for driver Jody Jamieson. The colt, who was riding a two-race winning streak coming into the contest, rallied past four foes in the final quarter to win by 1-1/4 lengths over odds-on favourite Derecho. Third prize was earned by Print Media.
Sent off at odds of 3-1, the son of Mach Three-Warrawee Cammy improved his rookie record to 3-1-1 from six starts with the win. Jack Darling Stables Ltd of Cambridge, ON owns the winner of $32,660.
Stablemate Continual Hanover was a popular winner later on the card, and once again it was Jody Jamieson who mapped out the winning trip. He got away fourth with the Darling trainee, before going first-over around the final turn. He stormed home in :28.3 to win by 1-1/2 lengths over Only Half Bad in 1:52.2. Big Yellow rallied to grab the show dough in the $18,000 contest.
The son of Bettors Delight-Current Hanover, who is owned by Jack Darling Stables Ltd of Cambridge, ON, came through as the 1-9 favourite. He now boasts a 2-2-0 record from seven starts. He’s banked $28,200 along the way.
Bingo Ingo was an upset winner to the tune of 24-1 in his division. The gelding rode cover from second-over and then fired home in :27.3 to win by 2-3/4 lengths over Macharoni N Cheese in 1:53.1. Southwind Mayhem took home third prize.
James MacDonald engineered the victory with the Tony O’Sullivan student, who is owned by Stephen Sexton of Xenia, OH. The son of Camluck-Lartesienne has recorded a 2-0-2 boxscore from seven trips postward. The lion’s share of the loot lifted his earnings to $23,340.
Secrecy also capitalized on a second-over trip en route to posting a win in his $18,000 assignment. The son of Mach Three-Unsolved Mystery tipped off cover in the lane and fired home in :28.2 to win by half a length over race favourite King Of Sports in 1:53.4. Tommys Trooper came on late to finish third.
Millar Farms of Newmarket, ON owns the Eric Adams trainee who now owns a 2-1-0 record from just five trips to the track. The gelding’s $9,000 payday bumped his earnings to $21,840.
Inspiration View was an overwhelming favourite in his division, and he didn’t let down his army of backers. The son of Shadow Play-Enjoy The View, who closed as the 3-5 choice, brushed to the lead in the second quarter and cruised to an easy win by 2-3/4 lengths over Daylight Rush in 1:52.2. Rounding out the top three finishers was Gerries Sport.
Trainer Mark Harder co-owns the colt with Rick Phillips and Peter Venturini, and together the partners watched the rookie win for the fourth time in six tries. Randy Waples manufactured the winning trip for the career winner of $41,816.
