Two-year-old trotters went head-to-head in a set of non-wagering Coupe De L’Avenir eliminations Tuesday evening at Hippodrome 3R, with Bastiano and Joyce Lavec capturing their respective assignments.

Bastiano got things started in the colt division with a 2:03.1 triumph for driver Rheo Filion and trainer Eric Gnocchini. The son of Angus Hall-Victorine L A led through fractions of :30.4, 1:01.4 and 1:32.1 before trotting home in :31 to win by one-quarter of a length over Sometimes When. Kinnder Dangerous was third in the $7,500 tilt.

It was the first lifetime win for the homebred, who bumped his bankroll to $5,025 for Quebec partners Eric Gnocchini, Paul Lavigne and Gestion Marc Lemay Inc.

Joyce Lavec recovered from an early miscue and turned it into a blowout score in the filly division for driver Pascal Berube. The daughter of Mr Lavec-Sam Valley miscued behind the gate, but recovered to be third on the outside at the quarter pole. She brushed to the front in the second quarter and operated on a five-length lead at the half in 1:06.2. She was leading by 10 lengths at the three-quarter pole in 1:37 before widening out the margin to 21-1/2 lengths at the finish. Muscle Do was next best, with KFB Filante nabbing the show dough in the $7,500 affair.

Dany Fontaine trains the homebred for Jean Berthiaume and Investissement K F B of Sorel-Tracy, QC. She’s a three-time winner from four starts and her career earnings stand at $12,690.
