A trio of rich divisions of the Frank and Beth Stanfield Memorial for three-year-old pacing fillies went postward on Sunday afternoon at Truro Raceway, with top honours going to Hey Jean, Iona Paula and Elm Grove Ella
in their respective splits.
Hey Jean rallied from just off the pace to take home top prize in her $19,633 tilt for trainer/driver Marc Campbell and owner Blair Hansen of Charlottetown, PEI. The Toofunnyforwords-Palma Panic miss drew clear to win by 3-1/4 lengths in a career-best clocking of 1:59.2 over Putnams Dough Girl. Woodmere Ellie May rounded out the top three finishers. The victory was the second of the season and the fourth career tally for the career winner of $20,342.
Iona Paula pushed her winning streak to two-in-a-row thanks to her 2:00.1 decision in the second division. The daughter of Sea Gull Hershey-Charlottes Amy came survived a first-over trip to win by 1-1/4 lengths over Seawind Allegra, who was sent off as a co-favourite with third-place finisher Cruising Champette. Driven by Angelo Camilli, who co-owns the filly with trainer Italo Camilli of Sydney, NS, Iona Paula now owns a 3-for-15 record this season after going 4-for-17 as a rookie. The lion’s share of the $19,633 purse more than doubled her lifetime earnings, which now sit at $15,794.
Elm Grove Ella, who was the only winning favourite in Sunday’s Frank and Beth Stanfield Memorial divisions, led from start to finish in her $19,633 assignment. The daughter of Largo-Elm Grove Starlite held on to win by a head for trainer/driver Clare MacDonald, who watched the five-time winner defeat C H Yocoohno in a time of 2:01. Charlottes Coast grabbed the show dough. Sent off as the 7-5 favourite, Elm Grove Ella pushed her lifetime earnings to $23,640 with the win. She is owned by Ian Banks, Susan Karrel and Charles McDonald.
