Mohawk Qualifiers Complete

The Tuesday (July 27) qualifying session at Woodbine Mohawk Park featured eight events, four of which were for the babies.

Safe Conduct strolled to the lead around the final turn to win the first baby race of the morning, timed in 2:01.3. Sitting third, driver Chris Christoforou stalked a pace of :30.2 and 1:01.1 set by Evil Guy. South Port pulled first over up the backstretch and took over the lead into the turn as Christoforou strolled Safe Conduct out of third, but just briefly. Off three-quarters in 1:32.4, South Port galloped and Safe Conduct coasted to the finish 2-1/2 lengths better than Evil Guy. Camilla Christoforou conditions the Archangel colt for owners Banjo Farms and Charalambos Christoforou.

R Royal Port won the other trotting baby race with a front-stepping effort in 2:01.2. The Archangel colt led through fractions of :29.4, 1:01.1 and 1:31.2 to best a late first-over push from Elya Dreams by two lengths at the beam. Sylvain Filion steered the Shane Weber trainee for owners Thomas and Elizabeth Rankin.

Afair Somewhere won the first baby race on the pace going coast to coast in 1:57.4. Driver Tyler Moore set a clip of :28.4, :59.2 and 1:29.3 to cap the mile with a :28.1 final quarter and best pocket-sitter Mia Beach by 1-1/2 lengths. Alan Fair co-owns the Lyonssomewhere colt with Elizabeth Fair.

Somiki strode to a 1:57.2 mile in the other pacing event for two-year-olds. He led every step through splits of :29.4, :59.2 and 1:28.4 to win by 2-1/2 lengths. Tony O'Sullivan conditions the Always B Miki colt for owners David Willmot and Clay Harland Horner. Sylvain Filion sat in the sulky.
