Foiled Again To PEI?

One of Canada's biggest races. Harness racing's all-time richest horse. A dream for many that could become reality in a matter of weeks.

Two of the last three editions of the Gold Cup & Saucer have been won by trainer Ron Burke. Trot Insider has learned that Burke plans to send horses to PEI again this year to compete in the Maritime classic, and that Foiled Again is nearly a lock for the entry box at Red Shores Racetrack & Casino at Charlottetown Driving Park.

"I can't see him not going," Burke told Trot Insider in reference to Foiled Again, whose career bankroll sits at $7.4 million. The 12-year-old son of Dragon Again didn't have the most stellar start to his 2016 campaign but is coming off back-to-back wins at Scioto Downs and most recently at The Meadows. Burke indicated that Foiled Again could race again this Saturday during The Meadows' Adios Day card.

Named the U.S. Pacer of the Year in 2011, the best Older Male Pacer stateside in three consecutive seasons (2011-2013) and two-time O'Brien Award winner as top older pacing horse in Canada (2011 and 2013), Foiled Again would be the most decorated horse to race in PEI's signature event. The surefire Hall of Famer has won nearly every major open pacing stakes race on the continent for owners Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and JJK Stables, some more than once.

Foiled Again won't be alone on the trip to the Maritimes. Burke noted that another pacer from his stable would likely make the trip, with 2014 Little Brown Jug winner Limelight Beach and Atta Boy Dan as possible candidates.

Nominations for the 2016 Sobeys Gold Cup & Saucer, the 57th edition, close two weeks from today on Monday, August 8.
