This past Saturday's qualifying session was full of smiles for many watching the youngsters take that next step to the races. However, one ownership group had its dreams dashed in one tragic stride.

Theweathergirl, a filly from the first crop of Sportswriter out of the multiple-stakes winner Mach You And Me, had to be put down after breaking a leg in her qualifying debut.

"She was following along at the back and apparently took a bad step, snapping the front leg into the shoulder," said co-owner Terry De Matteo, noting that her smaller stature likely helped him and Kristine Green get the yearling for $15,000 at the Canadian Yearling Sale.

"She probably would have been the show stopper at Flamboro."

De Matteo wished to thank the staff and track crew at Mohawk Racetrack for helping get his horse off the track while in her injured state.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the connections of Theweathergirl.
