Goshen Meet Just Around The Corner

Harness racing at Goshen Historic Track comes just once a year.

For those new to harness racing, a visit to the historic oval will make quick fans of the sport. For just a few days each year, many talented trainers and drivers convene at Goshen Historic Track. They bring the "crème de la crème" of Standardbred trotters and pacers to compete in the New York Sire Stakes Excelsior Series, County Fair Series, Landmark Stakes, and the famous Hall of Fame invitational. In addition, delight in the excitement of amateur competition and racing under saddle.

Established in 1838, Goshen Historic Track was designated a “national historic landmark” in 1966, well before Churchill Downs received the title in 1986. Historic Track is the oldest continuously operated horse racing facility in the United States. With the absence of betting, this is truly a “sport for sport’s sake." It has been told that harness racing in Goshen began as early as the 1750s, with neighbours showing off their horses by racing down Main Street. Eventually, this put the pedestrians at risk; thus, the track.

The delightful and exclusive ambiance allows visitors to feel the history. Take a stroll through the barn and paddock area, visit the magnificent equine athletes, talk to horse people who are always eager to show off their steeds and talk about their plans. And if you hunger for more information on the rich and extensive history of the sport, its heroes and innovators, the Harness Museum is next door.

The racing kickoff concert features Dusty, Dave & The Boys, Sue & The Blind, and Black Dirt Bandits on Friday, June 29 at 6 p.m. Gates open at 5:15 p.m. Food and drink are available for purchase. Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the gate, $5 for seniors, vets and active military, free for children 12 and under.
