After hitting the board in five straight starts – but failing to win during that stretch – Mercenary found his way to victory lane thanks to a front-stepping score in Monday’s $8,900 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Mercenary marched to the lead for trainer/driver George Ketros in the added distance affair and sliced out fractions of :29, :58.3 and 1:27.2 before comfortably holding off Littlebitaswagger for the 2:03.1 triumph. Goldstar Badlands took home the show dough.

Mary Ketros of Arthur, Ont. owns the five-year-old son of Somebeachsomewhere-Ideal News who now boasts a 2-1-6 record from 14 trips to the track this season. The 16-time winner has earned just shy of $90,000 to date.
