Late last week, Ontario New Democratic Party Leader Andrea Horwath took the opportunity to have a first-hand look at the provincial horse racing industry since the Ontario Liberal Party decided to hastily scrap the successful slots-at-racetracks program.

As reported by the Flamborough Review, Horwath took a tour of rural Flamboro with Essex NDP MPP Taras Natyshak and veteran horseman Jim Whelan.

In the report, Horwath described the fallout of the contentious decision as “The devastation of an entire way of life."

“It’s something that I think had anybody who made this decision had a chance to observe first hand, before they made it, they would never have made this decision," she said. "It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.”

“It’s gone beyond anything I would have realized could happen in this country, all for the purposes of privatizing," Whelan was quoted as saying. "It’s just out of greed and there’s no accountability.”
