San Pail Scores Again In Open Trot

Fresh off a career-best clocking of 1:52.4 in last Monday’s $50,000 Open Trot, San Pail returned to Mohawk

Racetrack earlier this evening and posted a 1:55.1 victory for owners Glenn Van Camp and Rodney Hughes.

Hughes, who also conditions the five-year-old son of San Pellegrino, watched Randy Waples dictate easy fractions for the majority of the mile en route to posting his fifth win of the season in just 15 tries.

Waples tucked into an early four-hole with San Pail while Windsun Lane rolled the six-horse field to the quarter pole in :28.4. Waples hit the throttle as soon as the trotters straightened into the backstretch.

San Pail had no problem touching down on the lead, and when he got there he was able to lay down very sensible fractions of :58.1 and 1:28. That turned things into a final quarter sprint, and a :27.1 final frame was just enough for San Pail to hold off a late-rushing Armbro Chronicle. He used a :26.3 closing panel to finish second. Define The World, who was first-over in the third quarter ,held on to finish third.

“He’s kind of a funny horse and it goes week by week; sometimes he comes out here and he’s a little tough to deal with and other times and he comes out here and he’s a real sweetheart – he’s like his driver,” said teamster Randy Waples. “He ranks right up there with any trotter I’ve drove for speed, but sometimes he can be difficult and that is the only knock against him. He’s perfect gaited, he tries hard and he’s got unbelievable speed. I think the biggest thing he has going for him is his trainer – he’s in a small barn and he looks after him like he’s a member of the family.”

San Pail bumped his bankroll to $495,715 with the win.
