Truro Raceway kicked off its 2016 harness racing meet with four-year-old pacing mare Mrs Krabappel pulling off an upset victory in the Sunday afternoon (May 1) season opener.

The Saulsbrook Stables' Mrs Krabappel and driver Carl Isenor overtook leader Sauble Liz at the third quarter mark and went on to win the first race of the new meet by two and a quarter length victory in 2:03 for trainer William Allan McNeil. The Allamerican Native mare was the longest shot on the board at odds of 10-1 and paid $22.50 to win while breaking her maiden. Rosa Santanna, the race favourite, finished second while Sauble Liz settled for third.

Thirteen-year-old pacer Lil Orphan Cam took the $1,475 top class, winning from off-the-pace in 2:00.1 for trainer Jeff Ellis. The Camluck gelding is owned by Dawn Ellis Abbott and Mandy Ellis. The victory gave Dale Spence his second driving win on the day.

Darren Crowe led all drivers with three wins on the seven-race program, including the Opening Day's fastest pacer Pasta Vera. Pamela Moore trains and co-owns the seven-year-old McArdle gelding, who stopped the clock in 1:58.4 in an 11-3/4 length romp.

Live harness racing continues next Sunday, May 8 at Truro Raceway. First race post time is 1 p.m.
