Class relief was key factor leading to Goldstar Badlands’ success Monday evening, as the veteran pacer produced a come-from-behind score in the $8,500 Preferred 3 for horse and gelding pacers at The Raceway at Western Fair District.

Goldstar Badlands, who was sent off as the 1-2 favourite in the eight-horse affair, got away fourth for driver Robert Shepherd while Littlebitaswagger chopped out fractions of :28.2, :57.2 and 1:26.1. Shepherd swung his charge to the outside and caught cover going to the three-quarter pole. Goldstar Badlands then used a :29-second closing kick to win by 3-3/4 lengths over The Loan Ranger in 1:56.1. Third prize went to Twilite Zone.

Heather Toll trains the eight-year-old son of Badlands Hanover-Rockin Lady for owner Morley Bradshaw of Wilsonville, Ont. The 33-time winner improved this year’s record to 2-0-1 from seven tries while lifting his lifetime earnings to $226,021.
