After four decades of dedicated service to the Canadian Standardbred industry, Heather Reid, the manager of Standardbred Canada’s Sales and Stakes Department, has announced that she will be retiring from her position, effective April 1.

“It was time,” Reid, who has worked with the company for 46 and a half years, said succinctly.

Reid worked her first day with the former Canadian Standardbred Horse Society on September 21, 1971. She made her foray into the Standardbred industry as a part-time typist for the CSHS when she was a 16-year-old senior in high school. While continuing to work part-time for the company – which years later was amalgamated to become Standardbred Canada – Reid was offered a full-time position with the CSHS by Bob Stewart while in college.

Reid’s first major project was the 1971 yearling sale, in which she and Stewart were able to attract 65 yearlings. Since then, Reid has become one of the world’s most knowledgeable authorities in the area of sales, breeding and pedigree services.

In the mid-1980s, Reid took over the position of secretary/treasurer of the CSHS. When the CSHS and the Canadian Trotting Association merged to form Standardbred Canada in 1998, Reid became SC’s corporate secretary. She then became the manager of SC’s sales department, a role in which she has been respected and praised in since day one.

Heather and her husband, Chuck, owned horses for over 40 years. They have been two of the most recognizable faces at Canadian Standardbred sales. Heather has agreed to work with Standardbred Canada in a consulting capacity over the upcoming months.

“Heather’s contribution to the Standardbred industry can not be overstated,” said Standardbred Canada President and CEO Dan Gall. “She has been an incredible ambassador for the sport, and, most importantly, Heather has been a loyal and dedicated supporter of Standardbred Canada and the harness racing industry.

“I welcome the industry to join me in wishing Heather all the best in her retirement.”

Thank you Heather for your years of service to our industry. Now sit back and relax, and enjoy yourself.

Always enjoyed seeing you at the sales and thanks always for your help. All the best in retirement. Just come back and see us from time to time.

Thanks for everything Heather. Your tremendous experience and comforting presence at SC will be sorely missed. Enjoy your retirement.

Hi Heather.

When I started with Park Insurance, Sept.2, 1980, Canadian Standardbred Horse Society was one of the policies I worked on with Ray and Brian, and you were the go-to-person. We had many great discussions over the years, and not just about insurance. You always asked about my family, horses, and whatever was going on in life. Was always a good talk. Over the years, and after many changes at Park and Standardbred Canada, our discussions became less and less, but were always valued and remembered. Have a great retirement!

When I was a summer student with Standardbred Canada, Heather was always a joy to cross paths with. All the best in your retirement Heather, it's time for some well-deserved R&R! You've been an incredible asset to SC and the industry at large. You will be greatly missed!

Morning Heather, Gay and I want to add our best wishes to you in your retirement. You have certainly earned it (Are you ready Chuck!) To know you as a friend and colleague through all these years has been an honour. I look forward to reading Volume 1 of your memories. Professional, kind, innovative, loyal, flexible come to mind when naming a few of your qualities, but simply you are like one of the many sale toppers, “one of the good ones.” See you soon!

Good Luck in your retirement Heather, My brother Don always enjoyed working for you at the sales at Flamboro Downs.

Heather, we wish you a long and healthy retirement. Your dedication, knowledge and ability has allowed the SC Sales to develop, expand and most importantly, meet the needs of our membership, consignors and buyers. Thank you for a job well done!

She will be greatly missed, such a great lady to deal with.

Enjoy your retirement!!!

After knowing and dealing with Heather for all of her 46 years, it will be a real adjustment for me to manage my Standardbred Canada affairs. She was always my “ go to gal” when I was bewildered, confused, or just plain mixed- up! A call to Heather always got me back on track. She had such a refreshing and knowledgeable approach to problem solving that I’m sure will be missed by members both new and those of us who have played the game for some time. Enjoy your new life , your understanding and approach will be greatly missed.

Mother Reid,

Pleasure doing business with you over the years. Hopefully I'll bump into you at a yearling sale or in Las Vegas!!

Enjoy your retirement, you've earned it!

Cheers,
KM
