Trotting mare Torches Angel and driver Billy Davis Jr. waited for the passing lane to upend the favourite's bid for a wire-to-wire victory in Saturday night's $7,500 Preferred 3 at Flamboro Downs.

Dragin The Wagon, the public's 9-5 choice, left for the lead and pressed on when Lexis D J challenged, keeping that rival parked out the entire mile. Meanwhile, Torches Angel followed in the pocket spot, and when the field turned for home, she shot through along the pylons to prevail by half a length over Dragin The Wagon in 1:59.1. Lexis D J stayed for third, finishing three lengths behind.

Torches Angel was the 5-1 third choice in the field of nine and paid $13.10 to win.

Trained by Paul Belanger Jr. for owner Michel Grenier of Gatineau, Que., the five-year-old daughter of Angus Hall earned her first win of the season to go along with her five runner-up efforts in nine starts.
