Chewy Baca Edges Out Open Rivals

Chewy Baca was a wire-to-wire winner in Friday night's $10,500 Open Pace at Fraser Downs as he managed to hold off rivals closing on both sides for the narrow score.

Outside assignee Chewy Baca received some post relief with the field scratched from seven to five starters and he crossed to command at the start of the race. The seven-year-old Relentless Yankee gelding led the field through fractions of :27.3, :58.2 and 1:27.1 over the sloppy track surface with 3-5 favourite Son Of Anarchy launching a bid for the starring role from third-place during the third panel. Chewy Baca battled Son Of Anarchy down the stretch while Buddys Hope sprinted through the passing lane from the back of the pack into a three-way finish. In the end, Chewy Baca managed to hold off his rivals for the 1:55.2 victory by a neck. The pocket-pulling Beren Hanover also came close, finishing just a half-length behind on the far outside in fourth.

Travis Bowman drove Chewy Baca to his second victory of the year from five starts for trainer Sean Lancaster and owner Dr. James Findlay of Maple Ridge, B.C. The winner returned $11.10 to his backers for a $2 Win ticket.

The victory in the Friday feature was Chewy Baca's 39th career win and pushed his earnings to $198,941.
