PAPER CUT RETURNS ON GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT

On a night when fully nine of the 13 contests are carded for fillies and mares, two $20,000 splits of the Ontario Girls Pacing Series, for four-year-old Ontario-bred lasses, will be the marquee events at Woodbine – and a mare named Paper Cut is expected to be razor sharp.

Trainer Brian Lee gave Paper Cut, a daughter of Northern Luck out of the Albert Albert mare Paper Bright, the month of January off after she captured the Ontario Sired Autumn Series in early December and followed that up with a second and two third-place finishes in the late December Niagara Series. Last week, Paper Cut and regular driver Phil Hudon were a fast-closing second in the opener of the Ontario Girls series, and the effort was enough to make her the 2-1 morning line favourite in the Friday, February 27 series sequel (Race 3, 8:10 p.m.).

Another mare who settled for second last week, is worth watching on Friday night according to the morning line: Windsong Experanza, who’ll leave from the inside post position in the first of the two Ontario Girls splits (Race 1, 7:30 p.m.). Richard McNeill trains and co-owns the Astreos daughter, who is also fresh and keen after a January vacation and has been rated the 2-1 second choice. She’ll have to get past rival The Three Of Us, however, and the Bob Young trainee is undefeated so far in her 2009 season, having sailed home four lengths to the good in the Ontario Girls opener. The Mach Three lass is the 8-5 first choice in her division of six mares.

The final of the Ontario Girls series is slated for Friday, March 6 at Woodbine.

GENERAL BROCK SHOWCASES FOUR-YEAR-OLD TROTTING TALENT

Woodbine Racetrack is enjoying a surfeit of talented trotters this winter, and they will be showcased on Thursday night as the second leg of the General Brock Series for four-year-olds goes postward.

Three full $20,000 flights, with 11 entries each, will be going behind the gate, and it’s still anyone’s guess who might emerge as a dominant force, after last week’s opener saw favourites Society Kad, Ziegler Hanover, and Andovers Son all go down in defeat.

The only favourite who delivered on February 19 was Save My Ashes, a son of Andover Hall who stuck his head in front of Southwind Rew to capture the last of the four splits in a relatively pedestrian 1:58.3. This week, the Ira Fisher pupil is rated the 5-2 morning line favourite in the first of the three General Brock contests – and it doesn’t hurt that he has drawn the inside post in that 11-horse scrum.

A lass named Frenchfrysnvinegar will be back to challenge the boys again this week in the second of the three General Brock splits, but she’ll have to do better than her fifth-place finish in the series debut, especially since she’ll be up against opening split victor, Minor Supernover, who is a longshot no longer thanks to his efforts last week.

A stablemate of Save My Ashes, and one of three General Brock winners sent out by Guelph, Ontario trainer Ira Fisher last week (the third being Hp Forte, entered in the final split), Minor Supernover is rated 4-1 early for the sequel.

If last week is any indication, there should be plenty of action in this leg of the series.

Catch the trotters in the General Brock on Thursday night – they’re Races 3, 5, and 8.
