Kiawah Crowned Mr. Vancouver

After moving wide around the final turn, Kiawah sprinted home to capture the the $25,000 Mr. Vancouver Final for four-year-old horses and geldings Friday night at Fraser Downs.

Driven by Gerry Hudon, the son of Western Ideal got away sixth as C A Marauder (James Burke) set the pace with opening panels of :27.3 and :57. Shales Froggy (Barry Treen) was the first-over challenger reaching the front by three-quarters in 1:25.2. Following his cover, Warrawee Iceman (Darren Howald) angled three-wide while Kiawah moved four-deep as the field turned for home. The four battled down the stretch but it was Kiawah who proved to be the best tonight winning by a neck in 1:55.1 on a track rated sloppy.

Nathan Taves (Jim Marino) was the runner-up and Warrawee Iceman finished third.

The David Hudon trainee scored his 10th career win and lifted his bankroll to $100,543 for co-owners Bill Boden of Vancouver, B.C. and Monica Hudon of Edmonton, Alta.

In the $17,000 Open Pace, Classy Character and regular pilot Tim Brown went unchallenged through panels of :28, :58.1 and 1:26.1 before sprinting home for the win in 1:54.3.

Round Table Review (Scott Knight) finished almost two lengths back in second while Stonebridge Camlot (David Hudon) was third.

The six-year-old Shady Character gelding is trained by Amber Lancaster for Sandra Brown of Langley and Jack Thompson of Burnaby, B.C. Classy Character has compiled a record of 15-2-1 in 22 seasonal starts. This year the bay has earned $117,945.
