Balzac Water News

According to an article in the Tuesday, December 9 edition of the Rocky View Weekly, water for the proposed racetrack and commercial development in Balzac, AB will be provided from a reservoir fed by an irrigation canal near Kathyrn.

The article states that although an agreement with a provider is still being negotiated, Derek Lovlin, the MD of Rocky View’s director of Infrastructure and Operations, said water will be flowing from the taps when the CrossIron Mills regional shopping centre opens in August 2009.

Upgrading work is being conducted at the Graham Creek reservoir, 4.5 miles northwest of Kathyrn, which is fed by a Western Irrigation District (WID) canal. After upgrading, the reservoir will have capacity to supply 2,500 cubic metres of water per day, said Lovlin.

That amount will be enough to service the mall and other area developments for the next three to seven years, he added.

Raw water from the reservoir will be pumped into a treatment plant to be built near the reservoir, from where it will be conveyed by a nine-mile pipeline along Township Road 264 to east Balzac.

"Then, the reservoir could be expanded or there may be another raw water reservoir added," Lovlin said.
