Three-year-old pacing fillies were the stars of the show Thursday evening at Woodbine Racetrack, as the Rexdale, Ontario oval hosted the opening leg of the Niagara Series.

Two divisions were contested – each worth $15,000 – on the 10-race card, and the opening leg proved to be a very chalky one.

Witch Dali got off to a late start to her sophomore season, but she’s been making up for lost time in those limited number of starts. She kicked off the year with a 1:53.1 win at The Meadowlands on December 5 and she doubled up thanks to a 1:53 score in Thursday’s first division.

Jody Jamieson hustled the daughter of Dali-Whitesand Gem to the lead from Post 3 and together they led the field through fractions of :27, :56.3 and 1:25. A :28-second closing quarter was more than enough for the 4-5 favourite to win in 1:53 over Artistic Fusion and Saucy B.

Tony Alagna trains the lightly-raced youngster for Alagna Racing LLC of Steger, Illinois and Brad Grant of Milton, Ontario. The partners watched the filly win for the fifth time in her career while bumping her overall bankroll to $49,320.

Mach Some Noise disappointed as the favourite in the Autumn Series final on November 28 bounced back to win as she pleased in her $15,000 division of the Niagara Series for driver James MacDonald.

The daughter of Mach Three-Belinda Hanover got away third and watched Val Di Noto take the field to the quarter pole in :27.3. MacDonald had his filly up and driving in the backstretch, and the cleared to the top before slicing out middle splits of :56.2 and 1:25.2. A :29.1 closing panel was more than enough for her to defeat Double Joy and Val Di Noto in 1:54.3.

Tony O’Sullivan trains the five-time winner for Osullivan Racing Inc, Kirk McKinnon and David Goodrow Stable. Unraced as a rookie, Mach Some Noise now boasts a 5-2-1 record from 11 starts in addition to a bankroll of $50,348.
